Private universities and the labor market

Logically, the presence of private universities has become of great importance, even a necessity, in light of the steady population growth, as no less than one million students enter primary school annually, and these numbers are subject to increase, with the increasing number of births every year. Therefore, government universities, which have also witnessed an increase in their numbers, can no longer absorb the outputs of preparatory studies annually, especially with the shrinking space for vocational education, and the observation of a state of reluctance among families and students to engage in this education. Therefore, the labor market began to record its need for vocational specializations from graduates of preparatory studies in the field of commerce and industry and the various specializations they contain, because the desire of the student and his family at the same time is to complete university studies, especially with the improvement of the individual’s standard of living in Iraq. It has become possible for a student whose average does not qualify him for admission to government universities to find what he is looking for in private colleges and universities. This does not mean disparaging the academic level of those universities, although many people record observations on the level of private education at the university level.
Today we are talking about the presence of no less than 199 private universities and colleges, compared to 31 government universities with 429 colleges, with more than a million male and female students studying in various specializations, in addition to technical institutes and vocational preparatory schools.
According to this picture, and with the large numbers of graduates annually, a structural problem has begun to grow in the Iraqi economic reality. This problem is represented by the lack of compatibility between the labor market’s need for specializations and the outcomes of education in Iraq. This is why we find a significant number of graduates annually sitting on the bench waiting to seize a job opportunity that they might get, and their eyes are fixed on government institutions, hoping that the government will open appointments for these graduates. Such a matter is no longer easy with the large inflation in these institutions, and it has become a real burden on the state budget on a permanent basis. In contrast, the private sector is looking for specific specializations that have good qualifications, which it may not find in many graduates.
In light of this picture, we are actually facing a real problem, which we should stand before for a long time to find an appropriate solution for it, according to a clear and mature vision set by the government, and work is being done to implement it by both private and public universities, with my belief that the responsibility of private colleges may be greater than their public counterparts, because studying in them is for a price, and this price is not small, and therefore the student graduating from them should be highly qualified and skilled, qualifying him to enter the labor market strongly, in addition to the fact that (private universities) represent one of the most important wings of the private sector, and here it is assumed that they know more than others what the requirements of the labor market are, and how they can provide this market with its requirements of specializations, otherwise what is the point of hundreds of thousands of graduates graduating from these universities annually, to join the team of the unemployed, and this means that we are working to magnify the problem, not solve it.
The solution here lies in directing educational paths and aligning them with the needs of the labor market.
