Environmental expert Khaled Suleiman warned of the effects of industrial workshops spread across Baghdad on the population, while stressing their extreme danger to public health.
Suleiman explained that “the industrial workshops within the residential neighborhoods in the capital have a major impact on the acoustic environment of the residents, meaning that they are a source of noise pollution.” He stressed that “they expose the lives of the residents daily to what can be called auditory shocks, which negatively affects and eliminates auditory comfort, and this aspect has a major impact on a person’s balance and mental and psychological relaxation.”
Suleiman explained that “the waste from industrial workshops, including iron, plastic and other materials, is often left behind and not treated or placed in a safe place, which leads to it mixing with sewage or spreading in public places.”
He pointed out that “the impact of these workshops on air quality, such as blacksmithing and carpentry workshops, which generate small particles (microscopic) from treated wood, iron and other materials, and since these microscopic particles become part of the air, they can be inhaled, which affects public health.”
There are many industrial neighborhoods in the capital, Baghdad, including the Sheikh Omar industrial area, Al-Talbia, Al-Amiriya neighborhood, the industrial neighborhood in Al-Shaab and Al-Bayaa areas, and other neighborhoods that lack health control systems, which makes them another burden added to the shoulders of the capital’s residents.
