    Economy News - Follow-up
The Swedish government announced that it will gradually stop its development aid to Iraq.
The government said in a statement that it had instructed aid agencies such as the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Folke Bernadotte Academy to begin phasing out their operations by June 30, 2025.
"The circumstances have changed and Iraq is now a middle-income country with sufficient resources to care for its population," Minister for International Development Cooperation Johan Forssell said in the statement.
He added that the decision represents "an opportunity to expand our relationship with Iraq through cooperation in areas such as trade, environment and migration."
Over the past ten years, Swedish development aid to Iraq has amounted to around three billion kronor ($284 million).
In the summer of 2023, relations between the two countries became strained due to protests in Sweden that included the desecration of the Holy Quran.
Iraqi protesters stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad twice in July 2023, setting it on fire the second time, and Iraq expelled the Swedish ambassador.
Swedish development aid in general was fragmented, distributed among more than 100 countries, Forssell told reporters.
"When aid is distributed to many countries at the same time, it makes it more difficult to control and evaluate it. We will work in fewer countries than before and expand work in the countries where we are present," he told local media.
