In a letter to the European Commission for Migration, Italy stressed that the situation it faces is dangerous and Europe can not overlook it.
"There is an ongoing assessment of the possibility of the closure of Italian ports to dock ships that do not fly the flag of our country, and to carry the rescued migrants off the coast of Libya," the Italian news agency Aki quoted government sources as saying.
The sources explained that "the reasons for the Italian action is that it became intolerable" since all ships carrying out rescue operations anchored in Italy. "
"It is not possible to separate rescue and reception," the government sources said. "The EU contribution should not be limited to rescuing migrants who are only at sea."
Sources in the Italian government also reported that foreign vessels carrying survivors would be told to stay away from Italian ports unless other EU member states agreed to share the biggest burden.
The Italian Government authorized its representative to the European Union, Ambassador Maurizio Massari, to formally present the issue of immigration flows to Italy to the European Commissioner for Migration, Demetris Avramopoulos.
