In the Nezavisimaya Gazeta, Igor Sopotin wrote about Russian-Israeli talks at the highest level to determine the fate of Iranian forces in Syria.
The Iranian military presence in Syria, which still hinders southern Syrian neighbors, was expected to be central to talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Moscow.
So far, Russia is negotiating with the Iranian side about the fate of the Syrian south, which, as Moscow has repeatedly stressed, must be evacuated from all "non-Syrian forces" after the victory over extremist groups. Tehran, however, does not tend to simply abandon its positions.
Commenting on Iran's future influence in Syria, the director of the Center for Islamic Studies at the Institute for Innovative Development, expert of the Russian Council for International Affairs, Kiril Simonov, told the Nezavisimaya Gazeta: "The matter will end with the division of Syria, And areas under the control of the Iranians, such as Aleppo or Deir al-Zour, there is a Turkish protectorate in northern Syria, there will be Iranian control areas, and similarly there will be areas without Iranian influence, which is the only possible scenario. , By pressing Tehran itself, as the Americans do. "When the Iranians do not have the resources to support (their loyalists), it will force them to leave ... There are no other channels, especially for Russia, and Moscow can do this only indirectly, by influencing official Damascus."
Simonov points out that the strengthening of the Iranian presence in the southern regions of Syria has not been as deep as in Aleppo or Deir al-Zour. "There are separate places in the south controlled by them, but there is not even a pro-Iranian administration." There is a military presence, but not beyond that. Iran does not have the resources to control the administration in the south, as in Aleppo, where real estate is bought, so there are channels of influence on decisions taken by local authorities. "
Simonov added that there are regular Syrian forces, for example the Republican Guard in the south, did not notice the active participation of "Hezbollah" in the offensive operations of the government army there.
