Washington refuses to swap Gulen with US troops NB-242371-636677502746782688

said a senior US official, said his country rejects the link between the release of the US pastor jailed in Turkey and deliver the preacher to open God Gulen accused of masterminding the failed coup, according to the agency , "Agence France - Presse." "One aspect of the tension in the relationship between Ankara and Washington hasemerged when people, especially in the Turkish government, are directly linked to Fathullah Gulen and Rev. Andrew Brunson,

" the official told reporters in Ankara , adding that "we do not think it is appropriate Linking the two cases ".

"They tell us they gave us the pastor, but you also have a cleric, they handed him over to us and we will judge the pastor and return him to you," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in September.

"There are two different cases within a different legal system," the US official commented on Erdogan's statement. "It's not as simple as saying, take a cleric and give us a cleric."

The trial of Rev. Andrew Brunson, who has run a Protestant church in Izmir and has been detained since October 2016, has strained relations between Ankara and Washington for more than two years.

The Turkish authorities accuse Brunson of working for the Fathullah Gulen network and the PKK, where Turkey regards these entities as terrorists and has been accused of spying for political and military purposes.

The priest categorically denies the accusations.

The judge decided after the third session of the trial of Brunson last Wednesday to keep him in prison, which led to a strong reaction from US President Donald Trump, who called the decision a "disgrace."

"Pronson has been held hostage for a very long time," Trump wrote in a snatch. He called on Erdogan to "do something to release him."
