( Reuters) - The US Congress has officially banned the supply of F-35 fighter jets toTurkey in retaliation for Ankara 's purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems.

The Washington Times reported that Congress had decided to suspend the supply of these aircraft to Turkey until the Pentagon submitted a report assessing the Russian-Turkish contract.

Congress will also wait to receive from the US Department of Defense a report on the possible consequences of US-Turkish relations following the exclusion of Ankara from its F-35 fighter production program.
Turkey has invested $ 175 million in the design of a NATO fighter jet and has planned to purchase 100 such aircraft.

On July 11, Turkish Foreign Minister Mouloud Gawishoglu said the S-400 would appear in his country in the summer of 2019 and would be in service at the end of the year.
