IRBIL, Iraq — Iran’s Gen. Qassem Soleimani, head of the nation’s elite Quds Force, was killed in a strike early Friday at Baghdad International Airport, the U.S. military said.
“At the direction of the President, the U.S. military has taken decisive defensive action to protect U.S. personnel abroad by killing [Qassem] Soleimani,” the Pentagon said in a statement. “Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.”
Also reportedly killed was Abu Mahdi Muhandis, deputy commander of Kataeb Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Shiite militia group with a long history of fighting American forces in Iraq. The Pentagon blamed the group for a deadly strike in Kirkuk that killed a U.S. civilian contractor last week.
Department of Defense officials accused Soleimani of orchestrating last week's Kirkuk attack, as well as many others in recent months that have killed and wounded both American and coalition service members.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed the deaths in a statement to the country’s state-owned Tasnim news agency, saying it was the result of a U.S. helicopter strike.
Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared three days of mourning for Soleimani’s death, stating “severe revenge awaits the criminals who bloodied their foul hands with his blood and other martyrs’ in last night’s incident,” according to news reports.
The attack reportedly happened at about 1 a.m. Social media users said they heard explosions, followed by sounds of military aircraft.
The strike was confirmed about 45 minutes later by the Iraqi government’s security information cell, which posted photos of burning vehicles near the airport on its Facebook page, attributing the damage to a rocket attack.
In total, seven people were killed in Friday's strike, an official with an Iran-backed paramilitary force told The Associated Press, blaming the United States for the incident.
Early media reports said the attack was an airstrike that killed Mohammed Redha, a senior member of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units — an umbrella group that includes Kataeb Hezbollah and other Iran-backed militias, as well as other groups that have fought the Islamic State group since 2014.

Other PMU members and “guests” were also killed, the PMU said at the time, fueling online speculation that Soleimani and Muhandis were among the dead.
Iraqi state television later confirmed the rumors, but observers quickly warned that the killing of such a prominent member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps could lead to dramatic escalation in the region, where tension between Washington and Tehran has been mounting for months.
“Soleimani had cult hero status within IRGC and among Shia militias in the region, and was personally the most popular regime figure in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],” tweeted Vali R. Nasr, professor of Middle East Studies and International Affairs at Johns Hopkins University. “The pressure to retaliate will be immense.”
The attack came days after mobs of Iran-backed militia members breached the gates of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on New Year’s Eve, withdrawing from the area on Wednesday after a contingent of about 100 Marines arrived from Kuwait to bolster the diplomatic compound’s security.
It also came hours after Defense Secretary Mark Esper urged Iran and its proxies to stand down.
“We will not accept continued attacks against our personnel and forces,” he said in a statement Thursday. “Attacks against us will be met with responses in the time, manner, and place of our choosing.”
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., questioned the killing of Soleimani in a tweet before the Pentagon issued its statement confirming the general's death.
“Did America just assassinate, without any congressional authorization, the second most powerful person in Iran, knowingly setting off a potential massive regional war?” he wrote.
Soleimani’s Quds Force trains, funds and equips Iranian proxy groups, including Kataeb Hezbollah and others that fought American forces after the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Both the Quds Force and Kataeb Hezbollah are U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organizations.
After rocket attacks on bases housing American troops in early December — some of the 11 carried out in the past two months that have mostly wounded Iraqis — U.S. officials called on the Iraqi government to do more to prevent them and warned of decisive action if they continued.
arrage of rockets hit the K1 base in Kirkuk, killing an American civilian contractor and wounding four U.S. and two Iraqi service members. The Defense Department countered with airstrikes targeting five Kataeb Hezbollah sites in Iraq and Syria.
The air raids killed at least 25 and wounded dozens more. Iran-backed militias responded by storming the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad.
“General Soleimani also approved the attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad,” the Pentagon said in its statement confirming the attack that killed him. “This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans.”
The killings could herald a significant decline in U.S.-Iraqi relations, which were already on shaky ground after the earlier U.S. strikes. Kataeb Hezbollah is part of the PMU and thereby part of the Iraqi security forces.
Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi, whom Esper had warned of the impending weekend strikes shortly before they were carried out, criticized the Pentagon’s strikes as a violation of the country’s sovereignty. He also called for a review of Iraq’s relationship with the United States.
Iran-backed militia groups also promised to press the Iraqi parliament to move to evict the U.S. from the country, while attackers at the embassy chanted calls for America to leave.
In a statement Thursday, Esper said Iraq’s government had not done enough to curb “provocative actions” by Iranian proxies. He also called on America’s partners and allies to stand together against Iran’s “malign and destabilizing” behavior.
In response to the embassy siege, the defense secretary ordered a contingent of some 750 infantry troops from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division to deploy to the Middle East this week, adding to the some 14,000 troops sent to the region since last summer.
The first wave of the troops from the 82nd Airborne’s 1st Brigade Combat team departed Thursday. More would be on standby to deploy in the coming days, Esper said.
“The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world,” the Pentagon said early Friday.

Baghdad - Mawazine News,
the American assassination of the commander of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Qassem Soleimani, the most important Iranian military figure, is a warning bell for events that could erupt at any moment.
Qasim Soleimani was born in March 1957, in the town of Rabour in Kerman Province, Iran, to a poor peasant family, and in 1980, he joined the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to participate in the Iraq-Iran war, and he led the Corps of "41 God's Revenge", which is in his twenties. . He was later promoted to one of ten important Iranian leaders in Iranian military divisions deployed on the border.
In the 1990s, he took command of the Revolutionary Guards in the border province of Kerman with Afghanistan, and his combat and military experience enabled him to stop drug trafficking from Afghanistan to Turkey and Europe via Iran.
He assumed his last position in the year 1998, when he was appointed commander of the Jerusalem Corps in the Revolutionary Guards to succeed Ahmed Wahidi.
During the student revolution during the era of President Mohammad Khatami in 1999, Soleimani and 23 leaders of the Revolutionary Guards signed a petition warning Khatami, warning him that the Revolutionary Guards would suppress the popular movement if the government did not play its part in confronting it.
In 2011, the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, promoted Soleimani from a brigade to a team in the Revolutionary Guard, and Khamenei calls Soleimani the title of "living martyr".
In a major military strike against Iran, Iraqi state television and a spokesman for the "Popular Mobilization" announced that Soleimani was killed in an American air strike near Baghdad airport that targeted him and a group of leaders of the crowd, including Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, the second man in the crowd, in the early hours of Friday, January 3 Ongoing.
On Friday dawn, a US official confirmed to Reuters the killing of Soleimani and the engineer, saying that Washington was awaiting verification of the DNA from the two bodies. While US Senate Foreign Relations Committee member Democrat Chris Murphy said, "Soleimani was an enemy of the United States." He wondered, at the same time, whether "the assassination of Soleimani, the second most powerful person in Iran, would lead to the outbreak of a huge potential regional war?".
The Americans describe Soleimani as the "most dangerous man" in the Middle East, who has fought battles against them for many years, and has played a major role in building and supporting the Lebanese Hezbollah and Shiite factions in Iraq, and carrying out dozens of covert operations outside Iran.
According to the American magazine "New Worker", Soleimani, when he took over the leadership of the Quds Force, was working to reshape the Middle East in favor of Iran, from assassinating enemies to arming the allies, Soleimani had worked as an intermediary sometimes and as a military force sometimes, and for more than a decade his work was to direct Shiite networks Armed forces inside Iraq, building the strength of Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthi group in Yemen, and even supporting the most prominent Islamic resistance movements in Palestine such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
Washington categorized him as a terrorist, and the US Treasury imposed sanctions on him, and despite his management of operations and clients around the world, Soleimani was almost invisible to the outside world. End / 29 BC
