The Central Bank of Lebanon said, in a statement Thursday, that it will continue to allow commercial banks to buy dollars without a ceiling.
The Central Bank of Lebanon added that it will continue to allow commercial banks to buy any amount of dollars at the exchange rate.
The central bank’s intervention in the currency market, which began last week, led to an increase in the value of the Lebanese pound to about 23,000 pounds to the dollar, up from 34,000 pounds earlier this month.
The policy, which was agreed upon in a meeting between Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Finance Minister Youssef Khalil and Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh on January 11, was criticized as unsustainable for its use of limited dollar reserves to support the exchange rate. Ended 29 / p. 87
