Shafaq News/ The Secretary-General of Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq movement, Qais al-Khazali, accused security officials of carrying out arrests outside the scope of the judicial authority and extracting confessions from them under torture, while holding the Iraqi government responsible for these violations, alluding to the government's application of pressure on the judiciary.
"Unfortunately, in the era of the current government, police procedures and arrests are taking place without arrest warrants," Khazali said in a tweet on Twitter, seen by Shafak News.
He added, "Likewise, the heinous torture carried out by some figures affiliated with some security services against detainees outside the bounds of the law, humanity and morals, the extortion of confessions under duress, and the detention of some detainees for tens of days without conducting an investigation or recording their statements, and detaining them in private detention centers."
Khazali continued, "Then this government interferes with the work of the judicial institution, and disobeys the implementation of its orders, as well as transmitting incorrect news to important leadership figures in order to mislead and bully them."
He concluded, "All these matters are unacceptable, and require from everyone a clear position on the independence of the judiciary and non-interference in its work, and keeping it away from the pleasures and whims of the executive authority."
Earlier today, the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, revealed information that he said was "accurate" that partisan and sectarian pressure had been exerted on the judiciary regarding those accused of corruption and acts of violence.
Al-Sadr said in a tweet on Twitter, "According to what I received from accurate information, there are partisan and sectarian pressures (without disclosing those parties) on the Iraqi judiciary regarding some corruption files or the files of some accused of violence and targeting the prestige of the state and its private and vital headquarters."
Al-Sadr added, "We stress the prestige of the state and even the prestige of the judiciary and its independence and not to politicize it through those abhorrent pressures through which they are trying to acquit some of their affiliates."
Al-Sadr praised "the government's role in prosecuting and arresting some accused of corruption and violence," calling for "more firmness and strength."
He continued, "We are fully prepared to cooperate with them through Parliament, the largest bloc and the largest coalition... We will not allow the prestige of the judiciary and the state to be undermined, and we will not stand idly by. The prestige of Iraq is above all affiliation."
