    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Saturday (October 28, 2023), Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani explained the details of the integrated southern Iraq contract with Total and its partners to implement four projects in the fields of oil, gas, and renewable energy, with a value of up to 27 billion dollars.
Abdul Ghani said in a statement, received by “Baghdad Today,” that “the integrated southern Iraq contract project will include investing 600 million cubic feet of gas and will be implemented in two phases, as the first phase will end after three years, that is, within 2026, and will include investing 300 million cubic feet of gas.” As for the second phase, it will be completed a year and a half after the completion of the first phase, and the invested energy will also be 300 million cubic feet, which will make Iraq reap additional quantities of up to 600 million cubic feet from this important and large contract.
He added, "The Total contract and the gas invested in it through the five fields will contribute to the operation of more than five thousand megawatts of electricity, which will have a significant impact on the reality of supplying electricity to citizens, especially in Basra and the southern governorates," noting that "Iraq currently imports 1,000 One million cubic feet of gas from the Islamic Republic of Iran, which will make us self-sufficient after completing gas investment projects within five years.”
The Minister of Oil pointed out that "gas investment projects cannot be implemented quickly, as gas is produced in multiple stages and at different pressures. Accordingly, these projects, and although we are pushing for their completion quickly, the completion process requires high precision to extract dry gas to operate the stations, as well as cooking gas and condensate for use locally or for export."
Abdul-Ghani revealed, "The signing of contracts will stipulate the investment of all gas in Iraq. The next three to five years will be a way to end gas burning, and few burners will remain operated in the fields for safety purposes."
He stated, “A meeting was held for the joint management committee to proceed with the implementation of the Total contract to accelerate the completion of projects in the five fields, which are Majnoon, West Qurna 2, Artawi, Al-Lhais, and Tuba, and work is underway to actually enter into the process of investing in gas in these fields.”
He explained, "The integrated southern Iraq project will work in parallel between gas investment in the five fields and the implementation of the remaining three projects, which are the development of the Artawi field to produce light oil, as well as the establishment of a seawater purification station for use by injecting water to support reservoir pressures in the southern fields. The fourth contract is renewable energy investment that includes Establishing a power station with a capacity of 1000 megawatts using solar energy. It will be the largest station in the region that uses solar energy for the electricity production process.
On July 27, Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani signed a contract with Total and its partners to implement the four projects in the fields of oil, gas and renewable energy at a value of up to. 27 billion dollars.
