    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, MP Waad Al-Qaddo, confirmed today, Friday (February 23, 2024), the imminent reliance on a three-dimensional strategy to localize the military industry in Iraq.
Al-Qaddo told “Baghdad Today” that “the existence of an industry that secures the needs of the military institution in terms of equipment and weapons, even within the scope of the possible, is a strategic necessity that no one disagrees on,” noting that “there is a body concerned with the matter that is still in the process of development despite the success in achieving qualitative leaps from "In terms of manufacturing ammunition and light weapons, but we need more."
He added, “The Parliamentary Security Committee, in coordination with the Ministry of Defense and the government, is in the process of developing a three-dimensional strategy that aims primarily to push for the localization of the medium and heavy weapons industry, which is important for the defense of Iraq, by bringing in possible experts, assembling, or imposing specific points in future arms deals in terms of transfer.” Actual resettlement mechanisms.
He pointed out that "relying on self-efforts to secure weapons and equipment is a global context adopted in most countries, because it is part of efforts to support national security and reduce dependence on abroad, especially with regard to the necessary weapons that provide the forces’ need to establish security, combat terrorism, and defense."
Muhammad Sahib Al-Daraji, the representative of the Prime Minister, confirmed, on Saturday (March 4, 2023), that combating corruption in armament contracts and localizing military industries are among the government’s priorities, while noting that economic stability is guaranteed in Iraq.
Al-Daraji said during the opening of the Iraqi Security, Defense and Military Industries Exhibition, which was held at the Baghdad International Fair, that “the security forces follow an armament method that is compatible with the stage of development occurring in their leadership and management,” noting that “this requires a balance in the arming process that is compatible with the requirements of the stage and the political situation.” And the country’s foreign policy, which in turn depends on balance in managing the region’s files.”
He added, "Iraq has overcome many political and security crises, which are the terrorist ISIS gangs, as the Iraqi army and other security services fought this organization on behalf of the world, which owes Iraq this battle," noting that "the attrition that occurred to the armed forces in technical and logistical equipment must He must be compensated, and the world must help Iraq strengthen and re-arm the Iraqi army with the latest weapons and devices and focus on cybersecurity, because future battles will depend more on technical and cyber aspects.”
He stated that "the localization of industries in general will strengthen the Iraqi economy and create job opportunities inside Iraq to control the economic potential of the country, mitigate the social effects of unemployment, and preserve hard currency," explaining that "the process of localization of military industries takes a high priority for the government and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and therefore it sees interest." Expanding the Military Industrialization Authority, opening horizons for partnerships with public companies affiliated with the Authority, and localizing the weapons manufacturing process in Iraq in a manner consistent with the technical capabilities and what the law has approved through the percentage of the value added to military manufacturing inside Iraq at no less than 25 percent of the real value of the product.
