Turkey sends first aid ship to Qatar

Arab and international  Since 2017-06-22 at 17:47 (Baghdad time)

    Follow up of Mawazine News
Turkey has sent its first aid ship to Qatar after seven countries cut ties with the Gulf's small, gas-rich emirate and imposed a blockade on Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. The Turkish president seeks to play the role of mediator to resolve the Gulf crisis, criticizing the sanctions imposed on Doha.
The first Turkish ship carrying about 4,000 tons of food was launched Thursday to Qatar, which is under a blockade imposed by neighboring Gulf countries.
The cargo ship carrying non-perishable food, fruits and vegetables left a port in the province of Izmir (west) in the morning, and the journey takes about 10 days.
So far, 105 Turkish planes have been carrying food to Qatar since the start of the crisis between Doha and its neighbors, Turkish Economy Minister Nihad Zibekji said Wednesday, adding that the sea route would be adopted from now on.
Despite its slow pace, maritime transport allows the transport of a larger quantity of goods at a lower cost.
On June 5, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt and other Arab countries cut off diplomatic and economic ties with Qatar, accusing them of "supporting terrorist organizations" that "seek to destabilize the region" and approach Iran, Saudi Arabia's regional rival.
Ankara has special relations with Doha, especially on the commercial level and military cooperation. On June 7, the Turkish parliament approved a 2014 agreement that allows troops to be sent to a Turkish base in Qatar.
Turkish news network NTV reported that 25 soldiers with five armored vehicles would leave Turkey Thursday for the base, which currently has about 90 soldiers.
In addition to its proximity to Qatar, Ankara is also seeking to develop its relations with other Gulf countries, starting with Saudi Arabia.
Since the beginning of the crisis, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sought to play the role of mediator, by intensifying his contacts with leaders, strongly criticizing the sanctions imposed on Qatar, which he described as "inhumane."
On Wednesday evening, Erdogan held a phone call to Saudi King Salman and agreed to meet on the sidelines of the next G-20 meeting in Germany next month.
