The US Missile Defense Agency said Wednesday it had conducted a successful missile defense test in cooperation with the Navy off the coast of Hawaii.
Navy destroyer John Paul Jones has seen the long-delayed missile defense experience a day after North Korea fired a ballistic missile over Japan.
The test was to intercept a medium-range ballistic missile using standard Missile-6 guided missiles.
North Korea said it had fired its missile in protest at US-South Korean military exercises and that the launch was a first step in a military action in the Pacific to "contain" the US Guam region.
The United Nations condemned the missile as "outrageous".
The US missile defense agency said the test gave the naval component of the missile defense system a higher capability to intercept ballistic missiles in its final phase before reaching the target.
Japan has expressed concern that the United States has yet to provide it with a new, powerful radar system, according to a report by Reuters on Wednesday.
Japan is seeking a specific version of the anti-ballistic missile defense system, which will be operational by 2023, in the face of North Korea's missile progress.
