Field Study: Transforming 3 Southern Governorates into a Crossing and a Drug Factory

     Baghdad / Range

A study conducted by an Iraqi researcher in three southern governorates (Basrah, Dhi Qar and Maysan) revealed the increasing activity of trading and smuggling groups for the "crystal" drug. The study also showed that changing the punishment of death and life imprisonment to health and psychological treatment of abusers, Administrative, and the existence of tribal threats are all factors contributed to the size of the spread of drug addiction.
This came on the sidelines of a dialogue seminar, held at the Forum of Hope cultural entitled (the story of drugs in southern Iraq) hosted by Dr. Khaled Hantoush, a sociologist and head of the meeting at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Baghdad, and attended (range).
The seminar, which was moderated by Adawi al-Hilali, discussed the phenomenon of drugs that threaten the future of Iraqi youth in order to find solutions that contribute to reducing the spread of this scourge, which has become the body of Iraqi society.
The researcher, Hantoush, presented the results of the field research project in which he participated in narcotics in southern Iraq, specifically in the governorates of Maysan, Dhi Qar and Basra, to the prime minister's anti-narcotics committee to reveal serious facts including the extent of addiction and the reasons that led to this spread. Detecting the imbalance in the administrative - security system that stands behind many social problems including drugs.
Hantoush referred to the most important types of narcotics and their spread areas, including the crystal, which is the most prevalent in the three southern provinces, which is associated with a large number of acts of violence such as theft, robbery and kidnapping.
Hantoush summarized the reasons for the spread of drugs as "legal leniency after 2003, as the deterrent punishment of death and life imprisonment changed to health and psychological treatment in the sanatoriums for drug users and imprisonment from (5-15) years for its promoters."
The sociologist pointed out that "large traffickers escape from punishment because of corruption in the security services and tribal threats and the weakness of intelligence related to the trade of narcotic substances, as well as other reasons such as reducing the powers of drug abusers and the lack of specialized security staff and patrols and controls on the borders of cities with a few dogs And the towers control the international border as drug traffickers exploit the fragile points of open borders, especially with Iran to smuggle their goods, with the slow resolution of drug issues in all provinces and the lack of devices to examine users and the need to send blood samples Li Baghdad affects the conduct of the case in terms of delay resolved and the possibility of manipulation of the results of the tests. "
Young people constitute the majority of drug users. Most of them belong to poor families. Many of them are low-educated, unemployed and have no homes of their own. The results of the dialogue show that many of them suffer from loss and fear of the future, Their grim reality, according to the research study.
The study identified "the absence of any specialized health center in the provinces of Maysan and Dhi Qar to treat abusers In Basra, in its central hospital there is one hall with (22) beds, seemed ineffective or sufficient to treat addicts.
She added that "the three provinces witness almost complete lack of specialists in the treatment of these cases (in the architecture of one specialist and in Basra does not exceed the number of 10 people), meaning the inability to absorb all cases of addiction for the purpose of medical treatment and psychological .. Thus there is a real need to intervene to solve the problem Drugs ".
