"Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that those who came from far corners of the world are not entitled to ask Turkey what your troops are doing in Syria and Iraq, stressing that Turkish forces have the right to be there when thousands of missiles fall on their territory.
"We must ask those who came from the far reaches of the earth and tell Turkey what to do in Syria, Iraq, the Balkans, Somalia, Africa and the Caucasus. What are you doing here?" Erdogan said in a speech in Konya province.
"We are here because we have strong historical and humanitarian ties with this geography," he said.
"Those who have come from thousands of kilometers to the region, considering that they have a right to be here, are not entitled to ask us why we are there. We have a border of 911 kilometers with Syria and another 350 kilometers with Iraq," Erdogan said.
He believed that his country has the right to be in Syria and Iraq, while missiles fall on its territory and kill its soldiers after that.
"Those who sank the world with blood in order to provide security for their citizens, are changing the concepts and borders when it comes to our citizens," he said, pointing out what he described as "double standards" applied by those countries in democracy, human rights and international law.
Turkish forces are present in areas of Iraq and Syria close to its border with the two countries. Ankara says these forces are not fighting anyone but are working to prevent clashes between warring parties there and to prevent the fall of missiles inside Turkish territory as a result of these clashes.
