The EU's Commissioner for Agriculture, Phil Hogan, said Dublin would "continue to maintain its position" on the use of the veto in trade relations talks after Britain withdrew from the bloc.
"Britain, or at least Northern Ireland, has to stay in a single market or customs union to avoid problems with the borders that divide the island," said Hogan, an Irish politician.
"If the UK or Northern Ireland remains in the EU Customs Union or in the single market, which will be better, there will be no border problem," he told The Observer.
British Prime Minister Teresa May said before: "Britain will leave the unified European market and customs union after the exit from the bloc."
Dublin wants written guarantees that exit procedures will not lead to strict border controls between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The European Union said there was a need for adequate progress on the Irish border and two other key issues before EU leaders agreed to start trade talks with Britain in the new year at a December 14-15 summit.
Dublin officials say the best way to avoid tight border controls, which may include passport controls and customs restrictions, is to keep one regulation in the north and south of the island. "
But a party that supports the May government in Northern Ireland will oppose any agreement under which the Territory operates under different regulations than the rest of the UK.
