Australia has warned that the use of encrypted messaging applications poses the biggest threat to modern-day intelligence agencies, while Southeast Asian leaders pledged to strengthen anti-terrorism cooperation.
A summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Australia in Sydney concluded that the use of the black "web" was a growing dilemma, and countries in the region must coordinate efforts to keep things under control.
"The use of terrorists and criminals for the applications of encrypted messages is the greatest underestimation of modern intelligence capabilities," said Australian Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton. "The only way is to work together.
For his part, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, the need to "keep everyone ready, and work constantly with our neighbors in the region .. Terrorism has become increasingly transitory to countries."
"Sharing and sharing information is of great importance," he said. "We all know that what may seem irrelevant or irrelevant intelligence may be the missing piece that will solve the puzzle of the investigation."
