    Iraq News The

director of the Basra Antiquities Authority, Qahtan Obeid, is seeking efforts to reach new archeological discoveries in the province as well as the creation of the Museum of Antiquities, the second largest museum in Iraq after the Iraqi Museum in Baghdad, while hoping to retrieve a cannon for a British warship back to the beginning of the last century Found a cargo that was carried by a British warship and sank after being hit by Ottoman fire in World War I.

Obaid said in a press statement that the cadre of the company executing the suspension bridge linking the banks of the Shatt al-Arab found the cannon and tried to hide the subject not to expose their work to delay, but there was by accident a policeman working for us a period of experience gained awareness and aware of the matter and took us to lift the cannon, which weighs about three tons At a depth of more than five meters.

Obeid added that the ship's sinking incident is known in British circles, as mentioned by the elderly Al-Basrien. There is also a river called the Ruta River. The ships are forced to slow down at the Tigris River. There are two ships coming from the north. And the ship was loaded with guns and antiquities. The Ottomans took advantage of the ships, and if the cargo included heavy bulls, it was certainly a warship capable of carrying the weight, because the weight of the warships at that time was not less than three tons and at least eight guns.

He said the ship, which had sunk and is still visible in the Qurna district, is the mail ship, adding that the Japanese expedition, which was considered in the 1970s, was expected to be the ship carrying the antiquities, and they searched the Tigris River for three months between Qurna and Shafi, They did not find anything, then the Iraqis and then the Americans searched in 2013 in the Qurna and Alhartha and used very modern sensors, without finding anything because I think they searched in the wrong place.

Obeid said that the new theory seems logical that the injured ship continued its journey in the hope of reaching the British garrison in the Muhammerah then less than unnecessary weight as some of the guns, and therefore we will search the area confined between the area of Ashar - the city center - and the port of Abu Floss south by modern radar sensors In coordination with the University of Basra.

Obeid was commissioned in 2010 by the Director of the Middle East at the British Museum and in the presence of the President of the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage on this subject, and the British sources indicate the sinking of approximately (1000) different artifacts, some of which are very precious.

Obeid concluded that I would start collaborating with the British Museum and the University of Newcastle Library, which includes the most ancient British Army documents on the subject.

"Our work depends on coordination with foreign missions and international museums. The Basra Archeology Museum has been established in cooperation with several foreign institutions.

Obaid stressed that in Basra (165) sites, seven of which are protected only. How can we protect the rest of the archaeological sites from encroachments and indiscriminate housing? The Basra Police Command established an antiquities protection police of less than 100 participants who can not cover more than four locations and have one car consumed. We do not have enough protection, no budget and no support. We relied on volunteers, civil society groups and coordinators. It is one of the largest groups in Iraq.

In the context of the efforts of Qahtan Obeid, in the search for Iraqi antiquities, he says that we discovered the city of Alexandria in 2007 when we surveyed the north of Basra, areas that were not completely cleared as they were planted with minefields from the Iran-Iraq war and were immersed in the waters of the marshes. I have been stopped by one of the sites because of its large size, which is more than (7) km, and has effects and walls, and the Iraqi army has already used as a camp.

Obeid added that he realized that it was the city of Karaxpasino, the capital of Alexander during its war on Sousse, about which history has been built, fortified, and self-governing. They even built a currency for the city and established active maritime and land trade with Palmyra, Petra and China at that time, ) Donma.

Obeid insists that their next project will be on Karax, Iraq's main port, and hopes they will be fortunate enough to find the missing vessel.

For his part, Abdul Hakim al-Kaabi, professor of history and civilization at Basra University, said: "We believe in history that getting a piece of antiquities means a lot of things. It carries almost certain documents and explains many issues that we do not know until today.

Al-Kaabi added that if the ship of antiquities is found, the work is to determine the time period for it, and from the party that worked on the transfer of these effects, we know the extent of British interest in the Iraqi antiquities, some historical sources indicate that one of the English consuls in Basra was walking in The market and the artifacts found in the area of Marb - Zubayr - of the people who offered to sell in the market in small amounts, confirming that the British always carry important and valuable things of the ancient civilization of Iraq.

Al-Kaabi said that he can not predict the safety of the effects carried by the ship, Fakht Arabs is a river characterized by mud deposits, and in the event of the effects, we hope not to suffer significant damage as most of them are made of stone or old stone, which has the ability to resist environmental conditions.
