BAGHDAD / The MP for the province of Basra, Jamal al-Muhammadawi, called for the formation of an urgent emergency crisis cell to deal with cases of poisoning that appeared in the province of Basra and to identify the causes of the crisis, to find appropriate and timely solutions.
"We must speed up the formation of an emergency crisis cell at a high level of government to know the crisis of cases of poisoning and to identify the causes of this problem and to diagnose the causes of the epidemic and know the types of bacteria or virus that causes poisoning among the people," he said in a statement.
He also called on the National Poison Center to examine toxic and chemical substances to determine the extent of chemical poisoning in drinking water in Basra.
He criticized the delay in referring the British loan to "the establishment of desalination plants and water purification in the province, stressing his demand for the Prime Minister to open an investigation into suspicions of corruption in the Japanese loan allocated to the water of Basra, and the need to account for the defaulters in the Directorate of water Basra because of low chlorine in water, "He said.
He also blamed the Ministry of Municipalities for not replacing the old water network since 1989, saying it was one of the main causes of the crisis.
He called on the security authorities to take security measures to limit the cases of excess water allocated for drinking from the draft bid'ah.
Al-Mahmoudawi said that "a large part of the temporary and timely treatments falls on the central government and in particular the Ministry of Water Resources must increase the water releases to the province, and today the province does not receive from its share only 70 cubic meters per second through releases of the Tigris River because the other provinces exceeded the share of The second hand should increase the water pumping in the channel, which will in turn reduce the current problem simultaneously.
"At the strategic level, it is necessary to establish large desalination plants that provide potable water to address the delay in the existing projects," he said, stressing "the need to launch urgent financial allocations to the province to save the people from this health, water and environmental crisis.
