Saudi Arabia has said it is working hard to correct mistakes in targeting by its military alliance in Yemen, which killed civilians, including children, amid international accusations that children were killed by coalition raids.
On Monday, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) examined the Saudi registry on compliance with the Protocol on the Status of Children in Armed Conflict and repeatedly raised the issue of children killed in coalition attacks in Yemen.
"This has been going on for years, but there is no information yet about prosecuting, punishing or dealing in any way with any of the culprits or persons responsible for this type of act," said Clarence Nelson, vice president of the commission.
But Assiqir al-Otaibi, an official in the Saudi defense ministry, told the panel of 18 independent experts that the Riyadh-led coalition was committed to international humanitarian law and that the coalition had a list of 64,000 sites in Yemen that would not be targeted, including hospitals and schools.
Al-Otaibi added that the coalition's investigations concluded that there were "some unintended errors" in a number of these operations and that the Joint Accident Assessment Team recommended that perpetrators be held accountable and the victims compensated.
