China's Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that none of the developing countries will fall into the debt trap simply for cooperation with China.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying made the remark in an e-mail statement in response to comments by Vice President Mike Pence.
"On the contrary, cooperation with China raises the capabilities and levels of independent development of these countries and improves people's livelihood," she said.
At the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, Bens spoke about the China Belt and Road Initiative, saying that nations should not accept a debt that undermines their sovereignty.
