The Council of Basra province, southern Iraq, on Monday during its special session, to confirm its previous decision to proceed to transform the province into a territory, to "protect the city from the center of the abhorrent."
"More than 20 members of the Council signed today a request to turn Basra into a territory with an absolute majority, while 12 signatures are required," provincial council head Sabah al-Bazzouni said in a press statement.
He added that "the request was submitted to the Legal Department in the Council to take the necessary action, including the establishment of legal proceedings, especially that the Council has already taken similar measures to refer the request to establish the province to the Electoral Commission."
Al-Bazzouni pointed out that "the Council formed a committee to follow up its decision today and support the efforts that are consistent with the vision of the region, by activists and politicians in support of it in addition to civil society organizations and the mobilization of demonstrations and coordination, all to fair Basra and take administrative and financial benefits from the federal government in accordance with the Constitution."
