TOKYO (Reuters) - The Japanese government on Wednesday lifted South Korea from a "white list" of "trusted" trading partners, a move that could further worsen the rift in relations.

The Japanese government took the decision on Aug. 2 and subsequently issued a revised bill that is due to come into force on Wednesday.
The South Korean government has demanded Japan annul the resolution on several occasions, but Japan has not met any of South Korea's demands.
South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-won on Tuesday tried to persuade Japan to lift its decision, saying the South Korean government might reconsider ending the General Security Agreement on Military Information with Japan, but Japan did not accept the Korean proposal.
South Korea, which was added to Japan's "white list" in 2004, became the first country to be removed.
Removing Korea from the list would allow Tokyo to restrict exports to Seoul on a large scale. Japanese exporters will have to obtain licenses on a case-by-case basis for hundreds of dual-purpose industrial materials that can be used in weapons production.
The Japanese government said the measure was aimed at introducing a more efficient control system on the country's exports, and there was no intention to affect the relationship between the two countries.
But the South Korean government, and even the Japanese media, saw it as a clear retaliation for South Korea's Supreme Court decisions last year, which demanded Japanese companies compensate Korean victims of forced labor during Japan's colonial rule of the Korean peninsula from 1910 to 1945.
Bilateral relations between Seoul and Tokyo have been in a difficult phase since the latter imposed restrictions on exports of basic materials needed to make semiconductors and monitors to South Korea in July.
The South Korean government is expected to make a formal protest to the Japanese government over the new measure.
