    Yes Iraq: Follow up

An annual report by UNESCO issued on the occasion of World Water Day concluded that the countries of the world are not making sufficient efforts to preserve water resources, and it is now an urgent question about the correct assessment of their value, while Iraq will have a share of suffering, as the advisor in the Ministry of Water Resources, Aoun Diab revealed Iraq will face a severe shortage of water levels in the coming years.

He said in a televised interview; Water challenges do not concern Iraq alone, but rather are regional challenges, and that strategic indicators predict, in the year 2035, a water shortage of about 10 billion cubic meters, which will certainly negatively affect the water file.

The Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization said: Water is our most valuable resource, blue gold, to which no more than two billion people have direct access.

Not only is it essential for survival, but it also plays a healthy, social and cultural role in human societies.

UNESCO detailed this problem in a 200-page report, in which it was stressed that the cost of water should be measured not only in terms of its market price, but also in terms of the benefits that could accrue from its distribution.

Experts cite a number of aspects that affect this indicator, and they divide it into 5 categories, assessing water sources, water resources and ecosystems, assessing infrastructure for water storage, use, reuse or improving water supply, evaluating water supply services, drinking water and sanitation and related aspects. Relevance to human health, valuation of water as a factor of production and socio-economic activity, and other social and cultural values of water, including recreational, cultural and spiritual characteristics.

According to independent estimates mentioned in the report, by 2030, the world will face a general water shortage of 40%, and the situation will be exacerbated by other global problems, including the consequences of the epidemic.

The authors of the report stress that the problem of providing the Earth's population with water to meet their health needs, in light of the current sanitation crisis, has become more urgent than ever.

UNESCO stressed that while estimating monetary value is a simple and convenient matter in agriculture and industry, it has a disadvantage represented in the inability to make estimates, and even exclude other aspects that are difficult to derive income from, wondering in connection with their saying: How can we measure the value of 443 One million school days children miss every year because of a water-related illness?

The international organization concludes that an integrated approach can be developed that allows different aspects of water resources to be considered together in order to identify appropriate policy options.
