Iran blames Turkey for water scarcity in Iraq and Baghdad is sounding the alarm
Shafaq News/ The head of the Iranian-Iraqi Joint Chamber of Commerce, Yahya Al Ishaq, stated on Sunday that there are problems in the water resources of his country and Iraq due to Turkey's construction of nearly 20 dams on the Euphrates River.
In statements to official Iranian media, Al Ishaq spoke about the volume of trade exchange with Iraq, saying that "the trade situation between Iran and Iraq is stable, calm and relatively stable."
He added that "our exports to Iraq are second only to China," adding that "things are going well and the situation is better than last year."
Al Ishaq noted that "at present, the volume of commercial transactions is more than 5 billion dollars."
Referring to the water problems between Iran, Iraq and Turkey, the head of the Iranian-Iraqi Joint Chamber of Commerce said, "The Turkish government is building about 20 dams on the Euphrates River, and that Iran and Iraq have problems in their water resources because of this work," noting that there are challenges facing Iran. Iraq and Turkey for this reason.
He continued by saying that "the Turkish government has started its work and has built large dams on the Euphrates River until now."
In turn, the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources revealed that the country's water storage has reached a critical stage, and is relying on the amounts of rain expected to fall during the winter season to compensate for the shortfall, indicating that Turkey's contribution to the Tigris River amounted to 40% and Iran only 18%, according to the semi-official "Al-Sabah" newspaper. official in today's issue.
The newspaper quoted the advisor at the Ministry of Water Resources, Aoun Diab Abdullah, that "the water storage in the dams has reached critical conditions due to the consumption of large quantities of water in the summer, as the ministry relies on rainfall during the winter."
He added that "water imports from Turkey are the basis, as its contribution to the Tigris River reaches 40%, while Iran's contribution is 18%, and it has a significant impact in the eastern cities of the country, especially Diyala, which does not have alternative water sources, while compensating the rest of the shares. river from within the country.
And he indicated that "Turkey recently agreed to give Iraq a fair and reasonable share of water within a protocol approved by the Turkish Parliament and the President of the Republic of Turkey, and adopted as a document that rises to the subject of the agreement."
Abdullah pointed out that "the last meeting between the Minister of Water Resources and the representative of the Turkish President, the former Minister Faysaloglu, witnessed an agreement to postpone the construction of the (Al-Jarzeh) dam until negotiations are conducted between the two sides to reach a satisfactory formula for both parties regarding water releases, and this matter came in response to Iraq's request. ".
He explained that "Iraq's reservations about the construction of the (Al-Jarzeh) dam depend on two factors, the first of which is the lack of water imports and the other is the quality of water. To abundant amounts of water consumed for agricultural purposes and have a negative impact, because the water quotas will not reach sufficiently to Iraq, unlike the (Ilisu) dam, which needs to release large quantities of water to produce electric power in the summer and winter seasons.
Abdullah stated that "there is another reservation about the (Al-Jazira) dam, which is that the water used through agricultural operations is sewage water, and there is no outlet for its discharge except the Tigris River, and therefore the polluted water will come to Iraqi lands, and it works to change the quality of the water entering Iraq."
For his part, Minister of Water Resources Mahdi al-Hamdani said during his visit to the Mosul Dam and his participation in the (APSO) conference for the safety of dams that "the ministry is working on issuing a law regarding the safety of dams due to the importance of these vital facilities in securing the country's water need."
He continued, by saying: "We are confident that the brothers in Turkey and neighboring countries will have a fair distribution of water," reassuring at the same time, "the residents of Nineveh Governorate are safe from the safety of the Mosul Dam in all respects."
