Shafaq News/ The Parliamentary Agriculture, Water and Marshes Committee called on Wednesday for the need to take effective steps to ensure the continuation of self-sufficiency in agricultural products in Iraq in light of the low water levels due to the lack of rainfall this year.
The head of the committee, Salam Al-Shammari, said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, that the return of importing some agricultural products, especially vegetables, will continue and will include other products if the water shortage continues without radical solutions.
He added that the lack of clear response from the two upstream countries to the Iraqi demands for water quotas will lead to continuous damage to the agricultural sector and will clearly affect future agricultural plans.
He explained that: Self-sufficiency in agricultural products is in danger if the constant water shortage continues.
Al-Shammari stressed the need to continue government pressure on the two neighbors, Turkey and Iran, to ensure Iraq's share and not to link this file with other matters that do not serve the common interests and bilateral relations.
With the lack of rain this year, Iraq is suffering from severely reduced water supplies, and officials trying to revive the rivers say poor flows from upstream countries Iran and Turkey are exacerbating local problems such as leaks, aging pipelines and illegal withdrawals from the flows.
Iran and Turkey are building large dams to solve their water shortage problems, and regional cooperation on this matter is uneven.
The water crisis in Iraq has been taking shape for nearly 20 years. Outdated infrastructure and short-term policies have made Baghdad vulnerable to the effects of climate change and a lack of flows from Iran and Turkey, the source of about 70 percent of the waters of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
Iraqi officials say that negotiations with Turkey over how much water it will allow to reach Iraq are difficult, but at least they are ongoing. In contrast, Iraq is not holding any talks on water with Iran, which has contracted for the past 30 years to build at least 600 dams in the country, according to Reuters.
At a summit in Baghdad on August 28, countries from the Middle East, including Iran, discussed regional cooperation, but the issue of water policies did not make it to the summit agenda.
