Baghdad blames Iran for depriving Diyala of agriculture and sends a delegation to Turkey over dams
Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, on Saturday held an Iranian responsible for depriving Diyala Governorate of agriculture due to its cutting off water from Iraq, revealing at the same time that a high-level delegation was sent to Turkey to agree on a plan to operate the dams during the coming period.
This came during a visit by the minister to Diyala governorate, accompanied by the technical advisor to the ministry, and a number of general managers and directors of the ministry's formations working in the province to see the rehabilitation works of the lower al-Khalis pumping station.
The minister said in a statement today, that this is the largest station to feed Diyala Governorate with water from the Tigris River and to secure all the governorate's needs of drinking water and irrigate orchards, adding that it is planned to complete its rehabilitation work within the next two months.
He indicated that the ministry's formations are working to rehabilitate the station in addition to dredging the Tigris River within the region in order to secure continuous water releases even in the event of a drop in water levels, explaining that the ministry pays special attention to this station.
The Minister of Water Resources indicated that there is great cooperation with the Turkish side regarding the water file, and that the ministry will send a high-level technical delegation to the Republic of Turkey to agree on a plan to operate the dams during the coming period, adding: We hope from the Iranian side to cooperate in the field of water.
Al-Hamdani added that Iraq's water rights are a red line, and the ministry is keen to obtain a fair water share, noting that unilateral measures by the Iranian Republic have deprived Diyala Governorate of agriculture.
