Today, Thursday, the Technical Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Mithaq Abdel Hussein revealed that four proposals had been put forward to advance livestock and address the problem of fodder scarcity and high prices.
Abdul-Hussein said in a statement reported by the government media, that "feed prices have risen globally and most of the inputs to poultry farming are imported, which led to a direct impact on prices, in addition to the lack of direct government support for feed."
He added, "Last year's budget did not make any financial allocations for fodder, and subsidies for the cultivation of maize and barley were also lifted. These factors exposed the agricultural sector to serious challenges that threaten its existence and threaten its collapse."
Abdel-Hussein indicated, "The Ministry of Agriculture has submitted proposals to assist the agriculture and livestock sectors until the approval of the 2022 budget, including distributing fuel allocated to project owners for free or reducing its prices for them, as well as zeroing customs duties on imported fodder, in addition to its proposal that the ministries of justice, health, interior and defense By purchasing production from project owners, in addition to a proposal by the Ministry of Commerce that the food basket include eggs and chicken items.
And he indicated, "All the proposals have been submitted to the Council of Ministers, and they are awaiting a decision on them," noting that "the ministry is working to encourage farmers to grow fodder, as it, in cooperation with the FAO, has distributed sorghum and sorghum seeds and some feed, such as corn silage, to buffalo breeders for free."
Abdul Hussein continued, "It is in the process of finalizing arrangements for distributing fodder wheat with the Ministry of Trade," stressing "their distribution to animal owners at a subsidized price of 50 percent," stressing "the importance of supporting livestock, as it constitutes an important pillar of food security in Iraq."
