The Ministry of Agriculture announced, on Thursday, 4 proposals to advance livestock and address the problem of scarcity of fodder and its high prices, while revealing the direct cause.
The technical representative of the ministry, Mithaq Abdul-Hussein, told the official news agency, "Feed prices have risen globally and that most of the poultry farming inputs are imported, which led to a direct impact on prices, as well as the lack of direct government support for feed."
He added, "Last year's budget did not make any financial allocations for fodder, and subsidies for the cultivation of maize and barley were also lifted. These factors exposed the agricultural sector to serious challenges that threaten its existence and threaten its collapse."
He pointed out, "The Ministry of Agriculture submitted proposals to assist the agriculture and livestock sectors until the approval of the 2022 budget, including distributing fuel allocated to project owners for free or reducing their prices for them, as well as zeroing customs duties on imported fodder, in addition to its proposal that the ministries of justice, health, interior and defense buy production. From project owners, in addition to a proposal by the Ministry of Commerce that the food basket include eggs and chicken items.
And he stated, "All the proposals have been submitted to the Council of Ministers and are awaiting a decision on them," noting that "the ministry is working to encourage farmers to grow fodder, as it, in cooperation with the FAO, distributed sorghum and sorghum seeds and some feed, such as corn silage, to buffalo breeders for free."
