    Yes Iraq: Baghdad

There is conflicting information and statements between the Ministries of Commerce and Agriculture regarding the stockpile that Iraq owns of wheat and whether it will need to be imported or not. While it is assumed that the stock expired by the beginning of this April, according to the accounts of the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Agriculture talks about the existence of sufficient storage for 3 months, in addition About what will be harvested during the current marketing season, so that Iraq does not need to import.
Last March, Minister of Commerce Alaa al-Jubouri said that “the strategic stockpile of wheat is sufficient to reach the marketing season, which begins on the first of next April,” which the media read at the time that the stockpile is sufficient for less than a month, and will end with the start of the marketing season.
In this context, the Minister of Commerce pointed out that “the ministry has received offers from American and German companies to contract to buy wheat, as they are discussed through the Import Department and the Contracting Committee to choose the most appropriate one.”

    No need to import!
In a statement contrary to what the Minister of Trade’s statement suggests, the Ministry of Agriculture is still insistent and declares on more than one occasion that there is enough storage for three months, in addition to the expected production in the current marketing season, which may suffice for 7 months, which means that Iraq does not need to import wheat.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mahdi Sahar Al-Jubouri, said that "during the two years 2019-2020, Iraq was able to market 5 million tons of wheat, but in 2021 the marketing was 3.5 million tons of wheat, due to the reduction of the agricultural plan by 50%."
He added, "Wheat has been marketed to the Ministry of Commerce, in addition to 260,000 tons of seeds, which are high grades, and their distribution is continuing to farmers."
He pointed out, "Reducing the agricultural plan by 50%, in addition to reducing subsidies, not delivering farmers' dues for two consecutive years, increasing fertilizer prices and not providing fertilizer subsidies, will reduce wheat production from 3.5 million to less than 3 million this year, yet this production provides The entire need for the ration card of flour for 2022.”
He stressed, "During the current year 2022, we did not have any imports of wheat, and we will have self-sufficiency despite the decrease in production, and in previous years we had a surplus in production and it was stored in the warehouses of the Ministry of Commerce."
He explained, "The wheat harvest will be in mid-April, and we will wait until the end of the sixth month to notice the marketed quantities of the wheat crop to the silos in the Ministry of Commerce, after which the government decides," noting that "the preliminary data indicate that there is self-sufficiency during this year for the ration card items." “.
He pointed out, "We have stored more than three months, and until mid-April, the entire quantity will be delivered to us, 3 million tons, and this will be provided by the end of the year," stressing, "During 2022, we do not need to import wheat because it is available despite the lack of fertilizer support."
He stated, "The problem is to address the next year for the year 2023, because we need to pay farmers' dues for this year, in addition to previous years and to support fertilizers, and this is an essential point to provide complete food security."
He concluded, by saying: "We plan to produce 5 million tons next year, similar to the previous years 2019-2020, and pay farmers' dues a primary goal to encourage them."
