[size=30]A global platform classifies Iraq as a country with low reserves of wheat... and conflicting statements by two ministries about a stock that is sufficient for 30% of consumption

    Yes Iraq: Baghdad

A global report classified Iraq as one of the countries with low stocks of wheat, amid high prices globally, as well as conflicting statements between the Ministries of Trade and Agriculture regarding what Iraq owns of stocks, up to a difference of about 1.4 million tons, or equivalent to about 30% of Iraq’s consumption needs.
The Platts platform estimates that “the countries most at risk are the countries of the Middle East and North Africa, Oman, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, because they depend more on Russia and Ukraine for their food resources, especially with the high prices of Russian wheat exported from the Black Sea by 45.9% to $394 per ton.” Metric as of April 29, and higher wheat prices led to higher prices for flour and bread.
The report shows that according to US Department of Agriculture estimates, Libya, Oman, Lebanon and Iraq are at the lowest in terms of stocks, noting that with the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war not approaching, food security will remain a precarious priority for Middle Eastern governments.
A difference between two ministries on the presence or absence of 30% of Iraq's wheat
While the report classified Iraq as one of the countries with a low stockpile of wheat, official Iraqi statements increase ambiguity about the size of Iraq's strategic reserves of wheat.
Last March, Minister of Commerce Alaa al-Jubouri said that “the strategic stockpile of wheat is sufficient to reach the marketing season, which begins on the first of next April,” which the media read at the time that the stockpile is sufficient for less than a month, and will end with the start of the marketing season.
In a statement contrary to what the Minister of Trade’s statement suggests, the Ministry of Agriculture is still insistent and declares on more than one occasion that there is enough storage for three months, in addition to the expected production in the current marketing season, which may suffice for 7 months, so that the total stock is sufficient for 10 months, which means that Iraq does not need to import wheat.
The quantity that suffices for 3 months is about 1.4 million tons, in addition to Iraq’s low production this season of about 3 million tons, which is enough for about 7 months, bringing the total between storage and harvest to 4.4 million tons, which is equivalent to what Iraq consumes annually.
