A report by the US State Department monitors serious human rights violations in Iraq, which may turn into a document to condemn the Baghdad government in international forums.
The report submitted to Congress on April 12th, the US State Department accused the Iraqi state apparatus of unlawful or arbitrary killing.
According to the US State Department, the grave violations in Iraq included credible reports of torture in the detention centers of the Ministries of Defense and Interior. The report also documented cases of recruitment or illegal use of children.
The report included the imposition of serious restrictions on freedom of expression and the media, and threats to journalists, in addition to serious restrictions on freedom of the Internet and freedom of association.
The report touched on the existence of restrictions on women's freedom of movement, and the forcible return of internally displaced persons to sites where they faced a threat to their lives.
The report also spoke of serious government corruption, and a lack of investigation and accountability for gender-based violence.
The report concluded that the government, including the Prime Minister's Office, took some steps to identify, investigate and prosecute those responsible for human rights violations, but rarely punished them.
The human rights file in Iraq is one of the thorny issues, and the object of condemnation by international organizations, especially after the October 2019 demonstrations, in which the authorities used excessive violence against demonstrators, which cost Iraq the loss of its membership in the International Human Rights Council.
