The High Commissioner for Human Rights in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] announced documenting cases and attempts to commit suicide in all provinces of the country for the past year.
A member of the Commission, Fadhel al-Gharawi, said in a statement: "The number of cases and attempts at suicide in all governorates of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] reached 725 by 106 cases and a [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] attempt in Kirkuk followed by Baghdad with 102 cases and attempted [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] indicating that the cases and attempts of suicide among males amounted to 346 cases and females 379 cases."
"The methods of suicide cases and attempts documented by the commission were using poison, hanging, burning, fire and drowning," Gharawi added.
He pointed out that "there are several reasons that led to suicide cases and attempts, including psychological, social and economic reasons, lack of employment opportunities, lack of housing and lack of human rights and services provided to citizens, calling on the government and institutions concerned with the state to launch a campaign to address and reduce this serious phenomenon."
