Today, Saturday, the local government in Muthanna, southern Iraq, expected a suffocating water crisis in the governorate in the coming months, stressing that the current water situation is good due to the absence of an agricultural season.
The Deputy Governor for Agriculture and Water Resources Affairs, Abdul Wahab Al-Yasiri, stated that “the governorate has ended its problems at the present time with Al-Diwaniyah due to the end of its agricultural season or the end of (weaning irrigation),” stressing that “the water crisis occurs between the two governorates due to the non-compliance of farmers who are trespassers and licensed owners. Water pumps with the quota set for them by the Ministry of Water Resources.
He added, "These violations of the established water quotas lead to the loss of Al-Muthanna's water quota and its reduction as a result of the attack on it by farmers in Diwaniyah."
Al-Yasiri continued, "The water situation in the governorate is good and there is no crisis, but we expect in the next three months (sixth, seventh and eighth) a severe water crisis will occur in the governorate that is different from its predecessors."
The deputy governor explained, "The reason for this crisis is the start of a new agricultural season, in addition to the water releases, which will be very few, in addition to the large number of violators of rivers that occur in the governorates that precede us in the watercourse."
