Baghdad/Bright news
Baghdad intends to host an important meeting between Saudi Arabia and Iran, in which it is expected that the return of relations between the two countries will be announced after years of estrangement. Observers confirm that the Iraqi mediation has greatly contributed to smoothing the atmosphere and overcoming the differences that the region has suffered greatly.
A member of the Foreign Relations Committee in the House of Representatives, Amer Al-Fayez, said in a statement to Al-Mada that "the mediation carried out by Iraq between Saudi Arabia and Iran comes within the framework of bringing their views closer and sending positive messages to the world."
Al-Fayez added, "Iraq succeeded in converging views and consolidating the Saudi-Iranian relationship," pointing to the imminence of "a high-level direct meeting between Tehran and Riyadh on Iraqi soil."
He pointed out that "the calming of the situation between Iran and Saudi Arabia positively affects the region," noting that "everyone knows that Iraq has become a region for settling scores, and it has suffered from a bad relationship between Saudi Arabia and Iran."
It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi confirmed, last month, his country's pursuit of calm in the region, on a visit to Iran, a day after his visit to Saudi Arabia.
According to political sources, Iraq hosted five rounds of negotiations between Iranian and Saudi officials in recent months, with the aim of the two countries normalizing their severed relationship since 2016.
A government source told Al-Mada that "the stage of the security meetings has ended, and we have turned today to hold meetings of a diplomatic nature, and it is expected that the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia will come to Baghdad to announce the restoration of relations again."
For his part, political analyst Ali Al-Baydar said, in an interview with (Al-Mada), that "the rapprochement in relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran was not the result of the moment, but rather there are Iraqi efforts that lasted for more than a year, represented by the mediation of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi and Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein."
Al-Baydar added, "The mediation led to these results, and this rapprochement is positive for Iraq, that the intervention of these two countries will be positive, and our land will not be an arena for war and conflict."
He pointed out that "Iraq can invest in ideological issues related to its national ties with Saudi Arabia and its sectarian proximity to Iran, if decision-making centers improve this role."
Al-Baydar explained, "The success of this mediation means supporting the democratic experience in Iraq, the political system, the government and its institutions, and then we can be liberated and move unilaterally away from the pressures and mutual pressures that were occurring in the previous stages."
However, Professor of International Relations Saadoun Al-Saadi said in an interview with Al-Mada that "the return of Saudi-Iranian relations is still premature, given that the outstanding issues in the region are very many."
Al-Saadi added, "The first obstacle to these relations is the lack of direct negotiations with the United States of America regarding the Iranian nuclear file."
He pointed out, "Iran is in permanent hostility with the United States of America, which is a strategic ally of Saudi Arabia, and the problems are still pending."
Al-Saadi added, "A dialogue is taking place at the same time, hosted by the Iraqi government between the two countries at varying lengths, in order to soften relations and melt the ice between the two parties."
He believed that "reaching an agreement between the two countries will have positive effects on Iraq in being present with this agreement."
Al-Saadi concluded, “It is possible that Baghdad will soon host two delegations, the first from Saudi Arabia and the other from Iran, to announce the restoration of relations between the two countries, although there is no confirmation of this until the present time.”
