Shafaq News/ The American newspaper "The Wall Street Journal" warned on Saturday that Western countries might abandon the Kurdistan Region at a time when ISIS is seeking to re-emerge, while alluding to the repetition of the Ukrainian scenario with the region.
The newspaper published an article by French writer and thinker Bernard-Henri Levy, translated by Shafak News Agency, in which he asked if the Kurds in Iraq would be "a side victim of the war in Ukraine?", at a time when ISIS is trying to re-emerge near and around Erbil, and seeks to raise His head is in Sulaymaniyah, and he restores his sites in the caves and tunnels of the Qaraqosh Mountains.
The French thinker added that ISIS is exercising the daily test along the old sector 6 front, of the ability of the commander in the Peshmerga forces, General Sirwan Barzani.
Levy warned that the European and American partners of the Kurds "do not appreciate the danger, and they view ISIS as a tumor that has been removed, while it is very similar to mercury, the toxic liquid substance that evaporates and remains suspended, waiting for its opponents to reduce their caution so that it can gather again." He explained that "this is what is happening in the Kurdistan Region."
He pointed to the leadership role played by Iran, relying on its proxies in the region, to strengthen the Shiite militias affiliated with the Popular Mobilization Forces backed by units of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, adding that it deliberately launches missiles at areas of the Nineveh Plain, recalling that missiles fell several times this year on the outskirts of Erbil and its airport. .
The French writer mentioned that the Kurdistan government, since the first Gulf War and the beginning of the end of Saddam Hussein, has existed according to international law, but under pressure from Tehran, Iraq has been maneuvering for months and even years in order to weaken and strangle the region.
He pointed out that the region has not received its share of the federal budget since 2014, and the salaries of 30,000 Peshmerga fighters have not been paid, while the Baghdad government regularly pays salaries, pensions, and weapons of the Popular Mobilization Forces.
He also added that Baghdad prevented the Kurds from extracting and exporting their energy resources because of a "flawed and cynical reading of the Iraqi constitution."
Without the vigilance of a group of bipartisan Congressmen, including Senator Jim Risch, Senator Bob Menendez, Representatives Michael McCaul, Michael Waltz, Dina Titus, and Doug Lamborne, the Kurds may have long ago been forced to return to their hiding places in mountains.
Levy warned that Western leaders believe that in the face of the world war declared against them by a bloc of neo-imperialist authoritarian powers, namely Russia, China, Iran and Turkey, they can deal at a time with only one front, continuing his warning by saying that in this situation , Erbil may have to strengthen itself in anticipation of a repeat of the (US) night withdrawal from Kabul last year.
Levy concluded his article by emphasizing the importance of realizing that "Kurdish oil and gas are a serious alternative to Russian supplies, and that the Kurdistan region is now, as it was in the past, as a fortress for us against ISIS, and as a shield against the energy blackmail of Vladimir Putin and the chaos that followed."
Therefore, Levy called in conclusion for the need for the United States to "follow a foreign policy based on bipartisan support that reflects a commitment to defending the interests and principles of the West in both Ukraine and Kurdistan."
He explained that "the United States and its European allies should remember the wisdom of the ancient Roman writer Cicero to look at the whole world as if it were one city."

Bernard Levy: How are the fates of Kurdistan and Ukraine linked?
