    Baghdad - people
A Kuwaiti newspaper report stated that Sunni-majority cities are experiencing a sharp debate and division these days over the fate of Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi, and that indications are that Tehran's allies will not accept to remain in office.

According to the "Al-Jarida" report, which was followed by "Nass", (December 20, 2022), the political circles in Baghdad are discussing scenarios about the extent to which the Speaker of Parliament will be able to engage in confrontation with his opponents in the Sunni areas, not because of his weakness in influence or lack of allies, but because the indicators It says that "Tehran's allies will not accept a Sunni leader who succeeds in doubling his strength and his internal and external relations."

The report stresses that "the rule set by Tehran and its allies since the US withdrawal from Iraq in late 2011 is to place restrictions on the aspirations of Sunni politicians, so the most prominent leaders in that period were subjected to prosecutions and sentences that amounted to execution."

He added that al-Halbousi's opponents are waging severe campaigns of criticism against him, to the extent that he has recruited his followers to fight a confrontation that has been going on for several days in Tikrit. "Al-Halbousi's opponents are supported by a number of factions allied to Tehran, who remember that he stood by Muqtada al-Sadr against Tehran's ambitions for 10 months, before al-Sadr withdrew from Parliament."

The Kuwaiti report focused on the fact that the current discussion goes beyond the possibility of withdrawing confidence from Al-Halbousi and losing his position, as political circles say that the matter will go beyond that, because his opponents want to liquidate him politically, as it is impossible for him to return to competition in any upcoming elections, similar to previous Sunni politicians.

The Kuwaiti newspaper quoted an official source in Baghdad as saying, "Those close to al-Halbousi could be included in the circle of ready-made accusations, whereby he would be forced to give up any political ambition later." The source adds that Al-Halbousi "is not short of resourcefulness, and he has a young audience and large economic and political projects, so Tehran's allies will not tolerate him, unless there is a high-level regional intervention."

And the source adds that if he is removed, the collapse and division of his political bloc is possible, which means a complex new map of the Sunni space.
