Baghdad / Obelisk: Al-Monitor newspaper reported, in its English version, on Sunday, that the Iraqi economy is suffering from the rise in the dollar as a result of the smuggling of dollars out of Iraq.
The newspaper stated in a report translated by Al-Ossala, that when Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani entered the Basra stadium to attend the final match of the 25th Arab Gulf Cup, hundreds of Iraqis chanted, calling for a reduction in the price of the dollar.
The exchange rate of the US dollar against the Iraqi dinar was about 1,659, which is the highest price since 2004.
The newspaper added that the rise in the price of the dollar began shortly after the new government assumed power in late October of last year.
Several reports attribute the rise to the smuggling of US dollars - or illegal transfers - from Iraq.
The newspaper said that US officials raised this issue several times with the Sudanese Prime Minister, the latest of which was by the White House Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, Brett McGurk, last Monday, and US Ambassador Alina Romanovsky was in close contact with the Prime Minister and held more than ten meetings. The exchange rate was always at the top of her list.
To address the problem, the Central Bank of Iraq banned four Iraqi banks from using the US dollar: Al-Ansari Islamic Bank for Investment and Finance, Al-Qaddaf Islamic Bank for Finance and Investment, Asia Iraq Islamic Bank for Investment and Finance, and the Iraqi Middle East Investment Bank.
And the Central Bank announced that it is auditing the accounts of several banks and other financial institutions in an attempt to stop the illegal use of dollars in Iraq.
