In the wake of the "blazing" summer that the Iraqis are waiting for, the electricity crisis in Iraq has renewed after the Iranian gas supplies declined and a number of stations stopped working, at a time when specialists confirm that the US sanctions impede the sending of Iran's dues.
Today, Thursday, economic expert Nabil Al-Marsoumi revealed the truth about the Iranian debt to Iraq from the dues of imported gas and electricity, noting that the US sanctions prevent financial transfers to Iran.
Al-Marsoumi said in his post, "It is not true what the Ministry of Electricity says from Iraq that it does not owe Iran and that it pays monthly dues for gas and electricity imported from Iran."
He added, "What the prime minister said is correct, that Iraq owes Iran about 11 billion euros for its imports of Iranian electricity and gas, and that this money is in the Iraqi Trade Bank, but it cannot transfer it to Iran because of the US sanctions that prevent financial transfers to Iran."
He pointed out that "the decrease in Iran's supply to Iraq of about 10 million cubic meters per day of gas, and then the electrical system's loss of about 5,800 megawatts is linked to Iran's debts to Iraq."
And he stressed, "What is required of Iraq is an agreement with the United States to find a new mechanism for paying Iranian debts other than the payment mechanism in the Iraqi dinar, and unlike it, cases of reduction and interruption of Iranian gas will be repeated, and cases of the electrical system losing other production capacities will be repeated, and we will live another sweltering summer."
In turn, the ministry's spokesman, Ahmed al-Abadi, said, "The Iranian side has reduced the amount of gas flowing to Iraq by about 20 million cubic meters during the past two days."
Al-Abadi added, "Paying money to buy gas from Iran does not involve any delay, and there are no debts."
Al-Abadi said that a delegation headed by the Minister of Electricity will visit Iran next week to overcome obstacles.
He pointed out that Iraqi officials will inform the Iranian side that Iraq is on the verge of entering the peak loads due to the high temperatures.
For its part, Iran announced its intention to resume exporting natural gas to Iraq in the coming days.
The Iranian "Mehr" agency quoted the Iranian Ministry of Oil as saying that Tehran currently has two contracts for the transportation of gas with two power stations in Baghdad and Basra, and based on the agreement of the two parties, "these two contracts will be extended for the next five years."
The agency quoted the Iranian Minister of Oil as saying, "He met with the Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, in Baghdad, and a memorandum of cooperation was signed between Iran and Iraq in the field of oil, gas and petrochemicals."
Earlier, Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani affirmed that his government would proceed with the gas investment project in energy and electricity generation projects, as part of efforts to achieve financial revenues and end Iraq's import of oil products.
Iraq faced major crises in providing electric power, due to the Iranian side's failure to export the quantities of gas contracted with Iraq to operate its power stations, as the quantities of gas were cut or reduced in quantities exported to Iraq several times last summer, which embarrassed the Iraqi government to provide energy, and caused a wave of Demonstrations and popular anger in a number of provinces.
