Human rights: Efforts to activate anti-drug committees

the High Commissioner for Human Rights approached the Ministries of Health and Education to activate the work of anti-drug committees and to include mental health topics in educational curricula, stressing that most suicides happen to drug addicts.
Sarmad Al-Badri, Director of the Department of Relations and Media at the National Office of the Commission, Sarmad Al-Badri, said in a statement to "Al-Sabah": The Commission has great coordination with the Mental Health Advisor at the Ministry of Health regarding drug control, adding that it has approached both the Ministries of Health to activate the work of the Anti-Narcotics Committees in the Ministry, and of Education to study the inclusion of topics Mental health educational curricula.
He stressed the importance of the role played by the Al-Rashad Specialist Hospital for the treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts in Baghdad, and its endeavor to apply the latest treatment programs to patients, considering the spread of drug-related suicides as a serious indicator that the state must pay urgent attention to. Al-Badri revealed that there is no real database documenting suicide cases, especially those related to women due to social custom and recording them among other incidents, in addition to recording some honor crimes within suicide cases, pointing to the importance of protecting mental patients by adopting special legislation.
He stated that this includes developing strategies to ensure their access to important living and economic opportunities, in addition to obtaining their personal freedom and providing them with personal security through legal procedures to protect them from any assault, exploitation, abuse, or exposure to inhumane treatment, ridicule and contempt, while observing international obligations in this field. .
