Iraqi intelligence uncovers ISIS plot to attack US, Paris subways, PM says

    Published September 25, 2014

Iraq's intelligence operation has uncovered a plot for an attack on subway systems in the United States and Paris, the country's prime minister said Thursday.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he was told of the plot by Baghdad, and that it was the work of foreign fighters of the Islamic State group in Iraq. There was no immediate comment from Washington or Paris, and al-Abadi's assertion could not be independently confirmed.

Asked if the attacks were imminent, he said, "I'm not sure." Asked if the attacks had been thwarted, he said, "No." Al-Abadi said the United States had been alerted, and that the suspects included extremists from the United States and France who were fighting for the Islamic State group in Iraq.

"Today, while I'm here I'm receiving accurate reports from Baghdad that there were arrests of a few elements and there were networks from inside Iraq to have attacks ... on metros of Paris and U.S.," al-Abadi said, speaking in English. "They are not Iraqis. Some of them are French, some of them are Americans. But they are in Iraq."

He made the remarks at a meeting with journalists on the sidelines of a gathering of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.

"We have not confirmed such a plot, and would have to review any information from our Iraqi partners before making further determinations," National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said. "We take any threat seriously and always work to corroborate information we receive from our partners. We’re obviously very focused on the issue of foreign fighters, as you saw evidenced yesterday at the Security Council session the President chaired."

"We are aware of the Iraqi Prime Minister's statements and we are in close contact with the FBI and other federal partners as we assess this particular threat stream," New York Police Department Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller said in a statement Thursday. "New York City normally operates at a heightened level of security and we adjust that posture daily based on our evaluation of information as we receive it."

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday his administration is treating the report "with the utmost precaution."

"Our administration has been coordinating at a high level with local, state and federal partners. I want to assure the people of New York that we are monitoring these reports closely and are in close communication with officials in Washington," he said.

The Islamic State extremists' blitz in Iraq and Syria prompted the United State to launch airstrikes in Iraq last month, to aid Kurdish forces who were battling the militants and to protect religious minorities.

In addition to the brutality Islamic State has visited on the people in Iraq and Syria, western leaders have voiced concern that the group would move its terror operations outside the region.

This week, the U.S. and five allied Arab states expanded the aerial campaign into Syria, where the militant group is battling President Bashar Assad's forces as well as Western-backed rebels.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Officials strongly downplay Iraqi claim of plot to attack subways
    BY BRIAN BENNETT
Tribune Washington BureauSeptember 25, 2014 Updated 28 minutes ago

WASHINGTON — WASHINGTON_U.S. and New York officials strongly downplayed a claim Thursday by the Iraqi prime minister that his country uncovered a plot to attack subways in New York and Paris.

The new prime minster, Haider al-Abadi, told reporters at the United Nations General Assembly that militants who traveled to Iraq and Syria from other countries to join the Islamic State militant group were behind the plot. Such fighters have been a chief concern of the U.S. government because some are from Western countries and have passports that would allow them to return home relatively easily to carry out attacks.

But officials in the U.S. have not been put on high alert about any attack being plotted.

"There is no specific, credible information about any specific threat to the New York City subway system," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. He rode the subway himself Thursday afternoon as a show of confidence in the system's safety.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said city officials would always be mindful of new information it gets about threats and would act accordingly. But two intelligence officials said that al-Abadi's claim hasn't prompted the warnings and alerts inside the U.S. government that normally would accompany such information.

"No one in the U.S. government is aware of such a plot and it was not raised with us in our meetings with Iraqi officials here in New York," added a senior Obama administration official who did not want to be quoted discussing intelligence matters.
President Barack Obama met with al-Abadi on Wednesday at the U.N. to discuss the ongoing U.S.-led attacks on Islamic State militants that expanded from Iraq into Syria this week. Al-Abadi urged Obama and allies to speed up the delivery of promised weapons to rebuild his battered forces.

    NEW YORK

Iraq's prime minister said Thursday his country's intelligence operation has uncovered a plot for an imminent attack on subway systems in United States and Paris.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he was told of the plot by Baghdad, and that it was the work of foreign fighters of the Islamic State group in Iraq. Asked if the attacks were imminent, he said, "Yes."

Asked if the attacks had been thwarted, he said, "No." Al-Abadi said the United States had been alerted.

He made the remarks at a meeting with journalists on the sidelines of a gathering of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.

In addition to the brutality Islamic State has visited on the people of Iraq and Syria, western leaders have voiced concern that the group would turn its terror operations outside the region.

If true, you can not stop suicidal missions. Only way maybe to try is remove all foreigners from the country then, any associates. That would be best anyways for the country.

at last count there are approximately 9 million muslims in the u.s.a. where did they come from? our government thought it would be a good idea because according to those muslims, they came here for a better way of life and pose no threat to us. but that's their story. now, think about this. suppose all 9 million of them decided to kick some whitey azz, just think what kind of damage they could do from within? then a well placed attack from elsewhere could completely be catastrophic. wake up and watch your back.i believe it's coming, maybe not tomorrow, but i believe it's coming.
