“Evoking a Battle”... Waiting in Iraq for the steps of the American move in the region

Ambiguity surrounds the reasons that prompted the United States to reinforce its military forces on the Iraqi-Syrian border, in light of information indicating a possible battle in the region.
During the past days, the American forces brought in military reinforcements, including vehicles and soldiers, on the Syrian border, coming from the Iraqi side towards the city of Al-Qaim near the border city of Al-Bukamal along the Euphrates River. The international coalition forces, led by Washington, also conducted military exercises, in which warplanes participated, at the Koniko base in the northern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
In this regard, the Sadiqoun parliamentary bloc, the political wing of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq movement led by Qais al-Khazali, revealed that 2,500 American soldiers entered Iraqi territory and settled in Ain al-Assad air base, in addition to the presence of military vehicles and warplanes.
The American reinforcements coincided with the Syrian army sending military reinforcements to the 17th and 18th Divisions to the Al-Mayadeen area in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, close to the Iraqi border, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
According to the Observatory, the reinforcements came to compensate for the division's losses who were killed in the heaviest attack by ISIS in the desert of Al-Mayadeen, and also in anticipation of a possible attack against the background of information about an imminent military clash between the American forces on one side and the Iranian militias on the other side in Deir Ezzor.
packing target
In this regard, the Iraqi security expert, Sarmad al-Bayati, said, "The declared goal of the recent US moves is to protect Washington's interests only, but it is not possible to say for sure where the next move will be."
Al-Bayati added: “But it is likely that the action will be in Syria, because the United States will not take any action without coordination with the Iraqi government, given that Iraq is an important player in the region, and yet many rumors remain and the goals are not clear until now.”
The commander of Operation Inherent Resolve in the Joint Task Force Command in Iraq and Syria, US General Matthew MacFarlane, revealed yesterday, Thursday, that the coalition monitored “threats” led by groups in Iraq on social media platforms, stating that the bases of the international military mission were targeted.
General McFarlane confirmed in a special briefing from Baghdad via the Internet, in response to questions from journalists: “readiness to respond” to these groups, and while indicating that the ideology of ISIS still poses a threat, he pointed out that the organization aspires to restore its military capabilities.
geographical isolation
In addition, the Syrian newspaper, Al-Watan, reported media reports that the US forces present at Ain al-Assad base in Anbar Governorate, western Iraq, intend to close the border strip with Syria.
In this context, the Jordanian political consultant in Central America, Dr. Nader Armila, said that “in the atmosphere of global political volatility, everyone is trying their best in Syria to control what they can with their militias, and the first goal of the Americans is to control Qamishli’s oil and wells and protect the Kurdish allies.”
“The Americans seek to control and limit Iranian expansion and prevent the Turks’ intrusion into northeastern Syria. It is a process of targeting a geographical area and its unwanted elements, maintaining an adequate military force against Russian and Turkish intrusion, and ensuring that the Syrian regime does not return to control this region.” According to Armila.
The Iraqi security and strategic expert, Ahmed Al-Sharifi, agreed with what Nader Armila said about “geographical isolation” by saying, “The United States has clearly decided to isolate the land contact lines between Iraq and Iran on the one hand, and Syria, Lebanon and even Palestine on the other hand, which is what is called With (geographical isolation), which will start with border axes, the most important of which are Al-Qaim and Al-Bukamal.
Al-Sharifi indicated, during his speech to the agency, that “the American redeployment and positioning is not limited to Iraq only, but rather includes the entire Middle East, which indicates the existence of preparations for a battle, and this does not mean the outbreak of a war as much as it is called (special operations), for the sake of Cessation of ground logistical support for the factions in Syria.
The security expert explained, "The air operations currently underway are strikes against Iran's wings or arms in Syria, and it is very likely that these operations will move to Lebanon through a war between Hezbollah and Lebanon."
And in Iraq, al-Sharifi said, “If the factions in Iraq move due to the influence of the changes taking place in Syria and Lebanon, it is not excluded that the Americans will react to the factions by targeting their gatherings and their command and control centers.”
But if the Iraqi government, represented by Al-Sudani, manages to control the events and not drag the factions into direct clashes or threaten US interests in Iraq, then the Iraqi arena will remain safe and stable,” Al-Sharifi says.
Control of the Iranian factions
For his part, Professor of International Relations and Conflict Resolution at the University of Jordan, Hassan Momani, indicated that “the American presence in Syria constitutes a deterrent to the armed factions affiliated with Iran in the country, especially in light of reports that the United States asked Iran to control these factions and not attack the American forces.” It also happened in earlier times by targeting the so-called international coalition forces.”
Al-Momani stressed, "Everyone seeks calm and avoids military confrontation, but if confrontations occur, they will certainly affect security in Iraq, because instability in Syria negatively affects Iraq, and some of these factions have extensions in Iraq, and the common denominator is Iran."
