A member of the State of Law Coalition, Saad al-Mutalabi, confirmed, on Monday, that the people of Kirkuk have a bitter experience with the authority of the Kurds and the Peshmerga within their province, pointing out that the Federal Court in the capital, Baghdad, has defused the crisis in the province.
Al-Mutalabi told Al-Maalouma, "There are real fears among Arabs and Turkmens about attempts to return the Peshmerga to their areas in Kirkuk Governorate."
He added, "Past experience has proven that these fears were behind events, kidnappings and illegal acts."
He pointed out that "the problem of Kirkuk still exists and the Kurds' attempts to control it continue, but the Federal Court said the final word on this province and stopped handing over the headquarters to the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Peshmerga, which defused the crisis within the province."
Al-Muttalbi stated, "The political parties are required to move towards understanding and agreement on Kirkuk, away from imposing a fait accompli policy that leads to boiling masses around their province, amid fears of the power of the Kurds and the Peshmerga in this province."
The day before yesterday, Saturday, the Kirkuk governorate witnessed large popular demonstrations refusing to hand over the joint operations headquarters to the Kurdistan Democratic Party and its military apparatus, which generated a clash between the demonstrators and supporters of Barzani's party, amid political calls to calm the situation, sit at the dialogue table, and refrain from escalation.
