{Local: Al-Furat News} The Ministry of Construction and Housing explained today, Tuesday, that the first phase of city construction will provide more than 100,000 housing units.
Istabraq Sabah, spokesman for the Ministry of Construction, Housing Sector, told {Al-Furat News}, “The first phase of building residential cities provides more than 100,000 housing units,” indicating that “constructing residential cities is different from complexes because they are in different stages and the residential distance is taken into account.” .
He pointed out that "it is being completed in stages, taking into account health, commercial and recreational services and facilities, and its primary goal is to support and develop the housing sector and withdraw population momentum from city centers and districts to the outside."
The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Public Municipalities revealed that the housing projects currently implemented by the government cover only 50 percent of the deficit in housing units.
The Director General of the Ministry’s Housing Department, Engineer Sadiq Al-Fartusi, said in a press interview that the country is suffering from a deficit in housing units, exceeding 3 million units, despite the government implementing 7,000 housing projects since 2003, noting at the same time that there are 1,200,000 government requests. To obtain plots of land in the city of Baghdad.
He explained that his department was able to distribute more than 9,000 housing units among multiple segments, including families of martyrs, displaced persons, and the disabled, as well as widows and divorced women, while it continues to implement 17 housing projects, the units of which will be distributed later among the aforementioned categories, who did not receive a plot of land.
In the same context, Al-Fartusi stated that the department approved the designs of more than 350,000 investment housing units, stressing that the projects implemented by the government cover only 50 percent of the actual need, in light of the increasing population growth. He noted that the department is in the process of developing a work strategy until the year 2030 in implementation of the government program that focuses on the housing sector, in order to provide the necessary support, especially for the new residential city projects implemented by the ministry, as they will provide at least one million housing units in Baghdad and the governorates, in addition to solving The problem of expropriating and allocating lands in coordination with municipal departments that do not have sufficient funding to appropriate lands on which to build housing projects. He stressed at the conclusion of his speech the necessity of re-introducing the Central Bank’s initiative to support the Housing Fund, to continue lending to citizens after it stopped after the amounts allocated to it ran out.
