Shafaq News/ The head of the local government in Erbil Governorate, Omid Khoshnaw, announced on Tuesday that the Federal Supreme Court (the highest judicial authority in Iraq) had officially informed the Kurdistan Regional Government of ending the work of the provincial councils in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Dohuk.
Khoshnaw said in a statement he made to journalists today, including a Shafaq News Agency correspondent, that "last Thursday, an official letter from the Federal Supreme Court arrived in the Kurdistan Region regarding this matter."
He added, "The presidencies of local governments and provincial councils in Kurdistan are awaiting the issuance of an order from the Council of Ministers on how to deal with the court's decision."
On September 24, the Federal Supreme Court (the highest judicial authority in Iraq) issued a ruling terminating the work of the governorate councils of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq at the end of their electoral cycle.
The court said in a statement that it decided to rule the unconstitutionality of Article (2) of Law No. (2) of 2019, the First Amendment Law of the Law of the Governorates of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq No. (3) of 2009, due to its violation of the provisions of Articles (2 / First / B and C) and (6). ) of the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq for the year 2005 pursuant to the ruling decision issued No. (124/Federal/2023) on 9/24/2023.
Sarwa Abdel Wahed, head of the New Generation Movement bloc in the Iraqi parliament, announced at the time that she had won a lawsuit she filed with the Federal Court not to extend the term of the provincial councils in the region.
She said in a tweet from the “X - Twitter” platform, that she had won the first lawsuit against extending the life of Parliament, and this is the second lawsuit she has won.
