    Baghdad today - Baghdad
For a long time, the government and security services have been trying to control the issue of drug smuggling between governorates, as Iraq has recorded in recent years a state of chaos with the import and entry of goods through smuggling, including medicines and medical supplies that are not subject to examination or conformity with health conditions.
Today, Wednesday (October 18, 2023), an informed source revealed the completion of decoding the drug mafias among 5 Iraqi governorates.
The source told "Baghdad Today", "After 2014, Diyala formed the most important route for drug mafias to smuggle large quantities from the Kurdistan region towards Baghdad and 4 other governorates through winding paths and other direct paths in light of the presence of corruption in some controls and cover by influential parties." .
He added, "The issue of drug mafias was raised before the start of the law enforcement operation last March before the Prime Minister during his visit to Diyala and the issuance of orders to dismantle the mafias."
He pointed out that "important exceptional efforts succeeded in bringing down approximately 30 defendants linked to smuggling, including 3 important names."
The source, who refused to reveal his name, explained that “the decoding of the drug mafias between 5 governorates has been completed, while all the details will be announced later by the relevant authorities,” pointing out that “smuggling has not ended 100% because there are many people and entities.” “Involved in a trade that generates billions of dinars annually.”
The issue of health and security control over materials entering Iraq is one of the major problems, as its neglect in previous years caused large quantities of unusable medical materials to enter the country, which posed major health risks to citizens.
Last May, Minister of Health Saleh Al-Hasnawi revealed the decisions of the Council of Ministers regarding the issue of drug smuggling and not subjecting it to registration or examination.
Al-Hasnawi announced in a press statement, “The Council of Ministers’ approval of the recommendations of the Ministry of Health regarding the exchange of medicines in the private sector,” as well as setting a time period for all medicines brought in without any examination or registration to undergo examination procedures until May 15, and they will be destroyed if they are not examined or registered within. for a month".
Imported medicines constitute 90% of what Iraq consumes, while the Iraqi authorities announced in one year the seizure of approximately 100 tons of smuggled medicines, through 6 campaigns.
The minister pointed out the necessity of "issuing a license from the Ministries of Health and Trade for materials entering the Kurdistan region, so that they are considered legal and are not exposed to any legal problems."
Last March, the Ministry of Health announced the withdrawal of a number of officials after it was revealed that they were involved in leaking medicines imported from the Salah al-Din Health Department to the private sector.
Al-Hasnawi stressed, "The Ministry is 100% serious in combating the issue of smuggling and holding everyone who deals with it accountable with the harshest legal penalties."
Many reports and statements indicate that medicines are smuggled and account for 70 percent of what enters Iraq, amid warnings of the danger of spoiled medicines to people’s health.
