Yesterday, Monday, the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Ahmed Al-Asadi, announced the launch of the sixth batch of those covered by the social welfare program, which number about 90 thousand people, indicating that the total number of those covered by the program exceeded seven million and 300 thousand Iraqis.
Al-Asadi said during a press conference held at the Ministry building and followed by Al-Mada: “Today we announce the launch of the sixth meal for those covered by social protection benefits, who number 89,963 people, and this meal focused on categories that were more vulnerable than those applying via electronic application.”
He stated that “among those included are 7,941 people with disabilities, special needs, and the elderly. Thus, the number of people with disabilities and the elderly covered by social protection benefits is 401,404 people, which is the highest number of coverage reached by this category in the Social Protection Authority.”
He added, "As for widows, divorcees, wives of missing and abandoned women, single girls, and families of prison inmates, their number reached 13,960 women and families. Thus, the number of women covered by social protection benefits from all categories is 561,659 women and families."
Al-Asadi explained regarding the orphans covered by social protection, saying, “All 2,467 orphan applicants were screened and social researchers visited them.”
He continued, "The remaining numbers of the most vulnerable groups, especially those of older ages, and according to population density and poverty line in all districts and sub-districts, without exception, ranged from 818,104 people."
Al-Asadi confirmed, “The number of those covered by social assistance with the meal announced today reached seven million and 349 thousand and 324 people. Last week we issued two decisions, the first from the coordination committee between the governorates indicating the inclusion of social protection beneficiaries in residential plots of land, and the second from the Council of Ministers allocating 20% of Housing units built by the state for the categories of widows and people with disabilities. Therefore, the Social Protection Authority has taken all measures in this regard through auditing and screening of the beneficiaries, and we will enter into meetings with the Ministry of Construction and Housing and the governors for the purpose of implementing the two aforementioned decisions.
He stated that “our databases indicate that there are 240,189 families who do not own a home of their own and live in rented homes, and 1,133,416 families who share a house with others or live in slums. Only 66,541 families have personal housing.”
