    The government seeks to establish the largest petrochemical plant in the Middle East on the land of Basra Governorate, the richest city in the country and Iraq's economic lung. A plant that may give the country the opportunity to move from importing to manufacturing in dozens of manufacturing industries, especially with the presence of the raw material represented by oil.
    The representative of Basra Governorate, Kazem Al-Touki, considered the project very important for the city, which raises the value of Iraqi manufacturing in general.
    Al-Touki said, in an interview with “Al-Sabah” followed by “Al-Iqtisad News,” that “the petrochemical industry is very important for Iraq, as it is one of the countries with high oil reserves,” adding that “the factory is close to the port, which will support the transformation of Basra into the economic capital of Iraq.” In addition to raising its economic level globally and employing large numbers of workers.”
    In turn, Soran Omar, a member of the Parliamentary Investment and Economy Committee, explained, “The factory will operate on only one line, and it is necessary to operate all its lines.”
    Omar added, “The petrochemical plant will be a very important tributary to the presence of crude oil, and Iraq will not be satisfied with filtering and extracting gasoline and kerosene,” explaining that “the petrochemical plant works on black oil, and all the industries we need are involved in petrochemical materials.” Omar stated that “some
    countries It views Iraq as a market for its products, so it opposes the establishment of such projects, so as not to achieve self-sufficiency.” The
    spokesman for the Ministry of Oil, Asim Jihad, had previously stated that “the Nebras Petrochemical Project aims to build a giant industry in this field, and is implementing In two stages, the first is preparing the study and designs, and the other stage is direct implementation.”
    The basic principles for the Nebras project were signed with Shell according to a Cabinet decision on January 28, 2015. It includes a refinery with a capacity of 300,000 barrels next to a huge petrochemical plant. The project depends on exploiting gas surpluses
    . Natural, for the manufacture of various petrochemical products, with a planned production capacity of approximately two million tons annually, to form a solid industrial base that supports the plastic and rubber industries, and all related industries.
