Today, Sunday (December 3, 2023), the Minister of Construction and Housing, Benkin Rekani, revealed a proactive government step regarding lands in the south of the capital, Baghdad.
Rekani said in a post on his Facebook page, “After the completion of the Dora-Youssoufia road, the prices of neighboring lands rose more than 20 times.”
He added, "In order for these areas not to turn into slums that distort life in Baghdad (where some weak-minded people have begun cutting up agricultural lands and selling them), the government is working on preparing a civilized design for a kilometer on each side as a first stage to be a beautiful area that includes all commercial, residential, recreational and other activities."
Rikani pointed out that "the large population increase in Baghdad requires the opening of new areas (in various directions) and designing them in a civilized manner to restore our capital's civilized face, and this is what the government is working on."
He noted that "design is one thing and ownership is another. You may own a piece of land for commercial, residential, recreational, or even agricultural use within the city or elsewhere, and the government has not issued any action or permit indicating the expropriation of these lands. However, confiscation is constitutionally prohibited."
Rekani explained that “ownership of agricultural lands in Iraq is of various types (exclusive ownership, right of disposal, obligation, contracts of all kinds, or possession without a legal document).”
He stressed that "any step taken by the government is aimed at development and service only (which was delayed), and in return it cannot in any way harm any citizen, under any circumstances."
The Minister of Construction said, "Do not listen to traffickers. The government has not granted a single investment opportunity in these areas."
